A 365 Photography Project
Thinking back to this time last year, January 2020. We didn’t know what was coming.
I decided to try to another 365 project. I had successfully completed one in 2015 and attempted another in 2019, but did not finish it. {If you’re not familiar with a 365 project, it's when you take one image a day to document your year.}
Without missing a beat when 2019 ended, I started right up on January 1st, 2020. And what a year to have documented….
SO. MUCH. HAPPENED. Like everyone else, we learned, pivoted, won and lost.
And in true 2020 fashion, everything that could be different was different. Did you remember that 2020 was a leap year? Meaning we had one extra day of the craziest year ever. It also meant that a 365 project would now be a 366.
Year long photography projects are HARD. You will have days of over flowing creativity and you will have days where you just have nothing. It’s a roller coaster ride every step of the way. Pair that with shut downs and quarantines. It was truly like that movie Groundhog Day for months.
That last picture though. That feeling of accomplishment and completion. Ah-mazing!
The end result is a documentation of your year. Your family. Your adventures. Your highs and lows. Your growth and change.
And even though I thought I had an established shooting and editing style, it still changed. I say that the most growth I ever experienced in my photography journey was completing my yearly project in 2015. When you commit to shooting and editing every day, you learn so much about lighting, different camera settings and techniques. You are essentially practicing every day. You are training your eye to see the extraordinary in the ordinary.
Now, what to do with all of these images? I am in the process of making a printed photojournal. I’ll add it to our other printed albums that I keep on the coffee table.
I’d love to encourage you and follow along if you are working through a project. I’m also open to answering any questions you may have. My 2020 project can be found below and on Instagram. I’m not committing to a 365 this year but I plan on doing something. A 52? A monthly blog post? I haven’t decided yet.
